Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA)

Alpha hydroxy acids have been proven to reverse the signs of sun-damage, and while many people have only now discovered their anti-aging benefits, they have been used for centuries. In fact, Cleopatra bathed in milk, and enjoyed the exfoliating properties of a well known AHA, called lactic acid, which can be found in sour milk.

Lactic acid is a gentle skin exfoliant which also has moisturizing properties. It is used in topical cosmetics and skin peels, to stimulate cellular renewal, and is generally better tolerated by individuals, with sensitive skin, than glycolic acid.

While AHA’s may be created in a laboratory, Veritas Bioactives prefers to manufacture cosmeceutical skin care products with AHA’s found in nature; such as glycolic acid (from sugar cane), lactic acid (from sour milk), malic acid (from apples), citric acid(from citrus fruits) and tartaric acid (from grape wine).

The benefits of AHA’s include:

  • Increased cellular renewal
  • Increased skin hydration
  • Smoothing of rough skin texture
  • Decrease in depth of wrinkles
  • Reversal of past sun damage

Take note: AHA’s may increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, and for optimal results should be used along with a broad-spectrum ultra-violet ray protecting sunscreen, containing physical sun shielding ingredients, Zinc Oxide, or Titanium Dioxide.

Beta-Hydroxy-Acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy-acid, which serves two main functions to the skin. First, it is an excellent exfoliating and anti-aging ingredient which may be more easily tolerated by sensitive skin, than glycolic acid (AHA). Secondly, salicylic acid also may be used in cosmetic topical formulas to decrease and control the production of oil, making this ingredient the optimal choice for oily, and acne-prone skin types.

The key benefits of BHA:

  • Greater control over oil production
  • Deep exfoliation
  • Reduction of clogged pores
  • Smoother skin texture
  • Reduced acne breakouts

Flower-Acids (AHA) – Next Generation AHA

Flower acids contain citric, malic and tartaric acid, and are derived from the hibiscus flower, Hibiscus Sabdariffa. They are considered to be the next generation of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), as they have the ability to not only refine the skin texture and increase collagen production, but also protect tissues from photo-inhibition, with naturally occurring anthocyanins - which act as a “sunscreen”.

The key benefits of flower acids

  • Gently refines skin texture
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Increased skin hydration
  • Non-irritating
  • Cellular renewal

Vitamin A (Retinol, Retinaldehyde, Tretinoin)

Vitamin A regulates the skin cell growth and differentiation of cells, making it an exceptional “rejuvenator and skin regulator”. The benefits of applying a Vitamin A topically is a smooth, refined skin texture, and increased collagen + elasticity.

Derivatives of Vitamin A used in cosmetics are Vitamin A alcohol (retinol), Vitamin A esters (retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate), Vitamin A aldehyde (retinal), and tretinoin (all-trans reti-noic acid). Tretinoin is the most active form of Vitamin A and may produce tremendous skin irritancy. For this reason, it is considered a drug by the FDA, available in higher strengths only by prescription.

For anti-aging benefits, cosmetics may be formulated with any derivative of Vitamin A. Don’t be fooled, not all Vitamin A derivatives are created alike. These derivatives of Vitamin A - retinol, retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinal (retinaldehyde) must be enzymatically converted into tretinoin in the skin to produce anti-aging benefits. Since retinoic acid is the form of Vitamin A which the skin will utilize to produce these anti-aging benefits, it is likely that a stable form of retinaldehyde will perform most closely to a prescription strength tretinoin, often times, without the skin irritation associated with the prescription formula.

At Veritas Bioactive Cosmetics, our Vitamin A, is a highly stable retinaldehyde which produces the desirable benefits of Vitamin A, without the irritation generally associated with this ingredient.

The key benefits of Vitamin A:

  • Increased skin radiance
  • Increased collagen synthesis/density
  • Smooth skin texture
  • Decrease of lines/wrinkles
  • Effective in the maintenance of skin tissues
